How to Hone Scissors and Shears
- Even dull scissors and shears are sharp
enough to cut skin so handle them with care and avoid handling the blades.
- Use the hone on only one of the blades - the blade on
the side with the nut. On most of the Gold Seal shears this will be
a "knife edge" blade which is ground at a sharper angle than the other
blade.
- Hold the hone against the outside bevel surface of the knife edge.
Try to match the angle of the grinding, but be sure to make contact with the
extreme inside edge.
- Rub the hone against the edge toward the sharp edge of
the blade.
- Make contact when stroking toward the sharp edge only. Do not pull
the stone back and forth across the cutting edge.
- With firm overlapping strokes, work from the tip of the blade toward the
handle.
- A burr will be created along the cutting edge of the blade. When the
scissors are closed the burr will be cut off.
- Now the blade is really sharp. So, be very careful when you wipe the
blade clean.
